The Lady Eagles will be making the move from the Mountain League to the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference this season. “I think that’s a very similar goal with everyone else in the district, and we’re going to do our best to get back there and keep making noise like we have the last 17 years with Coach Rhoades.” “Our goals are to get back to the district championship,” Whitling said. Tyrone was eliminated in the first round of the District 6 Class 3A playoffs by eventual District 6 champion River Valley last season after winning District 6 4A titles in 20. I just wanted to continue that on and do the best that I can with these young ladies.” They have a great attitude, and it has been a pleasure working with them the last two years with Luke. “What made me want to apply is that the players are fantastic,” Whitling said. Whitling said his familiarity with the program played a role in his pursuit of the job. “Hopefully he can bring that expertise to the girls and really build on some positive things that we have accomplished the last few years.” “Mike has some college coaching experience at various levels,” Rhoades said. The school officially hired Whitling at the July 11 board meeting. It’s only going to help us once we get into the season.” “We wanted to get that terminology down with as many of the players as we have returning that I can. “It was important to have the chance to start working with them and put in the concepts that we’re looking to get in offensively and a little bit defensively,” Whitling said. Whitling has been running Tyrone’s Blair Regional YMCA team since Rhoades’ departure and previously served as the head coach of the Division II Mansfield women’s basketball team.
